Musalia Mudavadi Elated After Meeting Chelsea Legend John Obi Mikel: “True Football Icon”

NAIROBI, Kenya –Prime Cabinet SecretaryMusalia Mudavadi, expressed his admiration for John Obi Mikel, the former Nigerian football star, following an inspiring meeting between the two in Nairobi.

Mudavadi shared his excitement on social media, praising Mikel as a “true football icon” and noting the powerful exchange the two had during the latter’s visit to Kenya.

“Had a great conversation with Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel as he wrapped up his visit to Kenya. An inspiring exchange with a true football icon!” Mudavadi wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Mikel, who made a significant impact both on the club and international football stages, arrived in Kenya on Friday, May 2, 2025, to engage with young footballers through football clinics aimed at nurturing the next generation of players.

His visit was part of the ‘Football Fiesta’ initiative, which included motivational talks and coaching sessions across various regions of Kenya.

Known for his pivotal role in Chelsea’s success during his 11-year tenure, Mikel’s illustrious career included winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and the 2011–12 UEFA Champions League, among other accolades.

His achievements on the international stage were equally remarkable, with Mikel representing Nigeria in five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, winning the 2013 edition, and earning a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics.

The culmination of Mikel’s visit saw him host a watch party at the Nairobi Club, where he celebrated Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool, the newly crowned Premier League champions.

During the event, Mikel expressed his passion for developing local football talent and emphasized the importance of mentorship in growing the sport in Africa.

Mudavadi’s praise for Mikel highlights the significance of such visits in fostering international partnerships and inspiring Kenyan youth, especially in the realm of sports development.

Mikel’s role in the ‘Football Fiesta’ is expected to leave a lasting legacy in the country, one that could further elevate Kenya’s position within the continental football landscape.
