EMBU, Kenya- One person was killed and several others injured during violence that disrupted a political meeting attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in Nembure, Embu County, police have confirmed.
The National Police Service said six vehicles were torched during the chaos, which erupted after a group attempted to storm the meeting.
Several suspects were arrested at the scene as officers moved to restore order, according to a statement issued by Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga on Saturday.
The Deputy President was safely evacuated from the venue as the confrontation escalated.
“The Deputy President was safely evacuated, and law and order was swiftly restored,” the police statement said.
Police said officers confronted and repelled the group after it attempted to breach the meeting presided over by Kindiki.
The National Police Service condemned the violence, describing the actions of those involved as criminal.
“Regrettably, one person was fatally injured, six vehicles were torched and several persons injured during the chaos,” Nyaga said.
The police statement did not disclose the identity of the person killed, the number of people injured or how they sustained their injuries.
Authorities also did not reveal how many suspects had been arrested or the charges they could face.
Investigations have been launched to establish the full circumstances surrounding the violence and identify everyone involved.
Police warned that those found to have participated in the attack, destruction of property or any related offences would be pursued and prosecuted.
“Any individual found to have participated in this or any similar act of lawlessness will be pursued relentlessly,” the statement said.
The National Police Service said further updates would be issued as investigations continued and when operationally possible.
The confirmation of one death follows earlier reports of injuries and extensive property damage during the confrontation at the meeting.
Videos and photographs from the scene showed vehicles engulfed in flames as people fled the area. Security officers were deployed to disperse the crowd and secure the venue.
The meeting was part of Kindiki’s political engagements in Embu County as the United Democratic Alliance intensifies its grassroots activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.
