NAIROBI, Kenya – Heavy traffic has been reported along Thika Road after a lorry overturned near China Square, blocking the Nairobi-bound section of the busy highway.
Images obtained by Y News on Tuesday, October 6, show a white lorry lying across the Nairobi-bound carriageway, disrupting the movement of motorists heading towards the city.
Members of the public gathered at the scene as they attempted rescue operations, further affecting traffic flow along the highway.
A vehicle branded with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) logo was also seen beside the overturned lorry.
Traffic Builds Along Nairobi-Bound Carriageway
The incident has forced motorists to navigate around the blocked section, with drivers advised to use the service lane to bypass the affected area.
Footage from the scene showed motorists using road shoulders as they attempted to get around the congestion.
Triangulation data by Y News indicated that the traffic jam stretched for about two kilometres from Kenyatta University to Kahawa Barracks, while traffic around Githurai remained relatively smooth.
The cause of the accident had not been established by the time of publication.
Motorists Advised To Use Alternative Routes
Motorists travelling from Thika Road towards Nairobi CBD have been advised to consider alternative routes as congestion builds along the Nairobi-bound carriageway.
Drivers can use Kiambu Road through Exit 4 to bypass the affected section and connect to Nairobi.
Motorists can also use the Northern Bypass, with those travelling from Ruiru and surrounding areas connecting to alternative routes towards the city.
Those approaching from Githurai can use Githurai 44 and connect to Kiambu Road instead of joining the affected section of Thika Road.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution around the accident scene and follow directions from authorities as efforts to manage the congestion continue.
