NAIROBI, Kenya — Police have arrested two suspects in Lucky Summer, Nairobi, following an operation targeting the theft and handling of electricity infrastructure, the National Police Service (NPS) has said.
The operation also led to the recovery of several Kenya Power electricity meters and other items suspected to have been stolen.
The arrests came as police separately foiled an alleged attempt to smuggle tools into Ruai Police Station for three remanded suspects accused of robbery with violence and gang rape.
Two Arrested in Lucky Summer
According to the NPS, officers from Lucky Summer and Ruaraka police stations conducted the operation on Tuesday, September 15, in collaboration with Kenya Power personnel.
The operation followed information received by police concerning stolen electricity meters in the area.
“An operation targeting the theft and handling of electricity infrastructure in Lucky Summer, Nairobi, has led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of several Kenya Power electricity meters and other assorted items suspected to have been stolen,” the NPS said in a statement issued Wednesday.
The recovered meters and other items have been taken as part of investigations into the alleged theft and handling of electricity infrastructure.
The two suspects are expected to be arraigned in court as investigations into other reported cases continue.
Police Urge Public to Report Suspected Theft
The NPS urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspected theft and other criminal activity to law enforcement authorities.
The operation comes amid continuing efforts by police and utility agencies to protect electricity infrastructure from theft and illegal handling.
Kenya Power infrastructure includes equipment used in electricity distribution, making theft or unauthorised handling a potential disruption to electricity services.
Woman Arrested Over Alleged Jailbreak Plot
Separately, police in Ruai arrested an 18-year-old woman after she allegedly attempted to smuggle tools into the police station concealed in a plate of food.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Christine Njoki Gitau arrived at Ruai Police Station carrying rice and meat which she said was intended for three remanded suspects.
The DCI said Gitau had requested to visit Emmanuel Bosire, Ismael Arisa and Brian Gatheru, who are being held at the station over allegations of robbery with violence and gang rape.
Pliers and Shear Allegedly Hidden in Food
Police said a routine inspection of the food led officers to discover a pair of pliers and a shear concealed underneath the meal.
The tools were allegedly intended to assist the three suspects in escaping from lawful custody.
Gitau was immediately arrested and the items were recovered as police began investigating the alleged jailbreak plan.
The DCI said the discovery prevented what it described as an attempted escape from being carried out.
The allegations against Gitau and the three remanded suspects have not been tested in court.
DCI Warns Against Aiding Prison Breaks
The DCI reminded members of the public that assisting or attempting to assist a person to escape from lawful custody is a criminal offence.
The agency warned that people found facilitating such attempts could face legal action.
Investigations are expected to establish how the tools were obtained, how they reached the police station and whether other people were involved in the alleged plan.
The two cases remain under investigation as police prepare the suspects for court proceedings.
