NAIROBI, Kenya – Two more suspects have been charged in connection with an alleged Sh1.5 billion fraud involving the Programme for Rural Outreach of Financial Innovations and Technologies (PROFIT), bringing the total number of accused persons to 13.
Eric Otieno Achila, a sole proprietor of Dangzerina Enterprises, and Susan Wangari, a sole proprietor of Maxtor Supplies and Graybar Distributors, appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court in Nairobi on Tuesday and denied the charges.
Achila faces three counts of fraud, while Wangari faces four counts related to the alleged scheme.
Suspects released on bond
The prosecution did not oppose the release of the two suspects on bond or bail but asked the court to take into account the nature and magnitude of the alleged offences when determining the terms.
Prosecutors also asked the court to order the suspects to surrender their passports, obtain permission before travelling outside the country and avoid interfering with prosecution witnesses.
The court granted Achila a Sh1.5 million bond with a surety of a similar amount, or Sh650,000 cash bail.
Wangari was granted a Sh1.5 million bond with a surety of a similar amount, or Sh700,000 cash bail.
The case will be mentioned on September 2, 2026.
PROFIT fraud case expands
The programme was designed to support rural financial access and economic opportunities, making the alleged loss a significant concern for the management of public funds.
The expanding number of accused persons indicates that investigations into the alleged fraud remain ongoing, with individuals and businesses linked to the programme facing scrutiny over their alleged roles.
