NAIROBI, Kenya – Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has issued a stark warning to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), claiming the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is on course to win more parliamentary seats in the Nyanza region than ODM in the next general election.
In a strongly worded public statement, Amisi argued that President William Ruto is using state resources and the goodwill created by the ODM–government broad-based arrangement to aggressively expand UDA’s footprint across the country, including in ODM’s traditional strongholds.
“The government has unleashed massive resources for the revival of UDA countrywide, riding on the goodwill ODM has accorded it,” Amisi said, accusing senior ODM leaders of political naivety and complacency.
The government has unleashed enough resources for revival of #UDA party countrywide, using the good will that odm broadbased has accorded him. All this ,under the full glare of clueless ,smiley ,politically immature, excited ,selfish ,greedy top @TheODMparty leaders .Verily
The lawmaker warned that the strategy mirrors past political realignments under former presidents Daniel arap Moi and Uhuru Kenyatta, where dominant ruling parties gradually weakened opposition outfits before absorbing their support bases.
According to Amisi, President Ruto’s long-term objective is not coalition politics but the establishment of a dominant one-party system that would leave ODM politically irrelevant and without leverage in future negotiations.
“He does not want a coalition that can demand the deputy president’s slot. He wants a monopoly where he can choose and drop deputies at will,” Amisi claimed.
He further suggested that ODM members currently serving in government face a stark choice: defect to UDA or risk being dropped from their positions, arguing that loyalty to the President would inevitably translate into loyalty to his party.
Amisi also questioned the future relevance of ODM under the current political arrangement, warning that failure to openly debate the party’s direction could erode its ideological foundation and bargaining power ahead of the next election.
He said he opted to raise his concerns publicly due to the absence of internal party forums to air dissenting views, adding that his remarks were intended to safeguard ODM leader Raila Odinga’s political legacy.
“I say this not out of malice, but for the preservation of Baba’s ideologies,” Amisi said.
