Kenya Advances Nuclear Energy Plans in Washington Talks

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — A Kenyan energy delegation has engaged with the Nuclear Energy Institute in Washington, D.C., as part of Kenya’s push to integrate nuclear power into its national energy mix by 2034, aiming to boost long-term energy security and strengthen regional leadership.

The discussions are part of Kenya’s renewed focus on nuclear energy as a reliable, clean baseload source that complements its existing electricity supply, while creating opportunities for strategic partnerships.

Kenya is positioning itself as a regional pace-setter, with KenGen designated to develop up to 2,000MW of nuclear capacity and act as the owner-operator of the country’s first nuclear power plant.

Speaking during the engagement, Principal Secretary Alex Wachira highlighted Kenya’s role as a gateway to the Eastern African energy market, while Joseph Siror emphasised that nuclear energy will provide crucial baseload power to support grid stability.

The programme builds on the 2022 civil nuclear cooperation agreement between Kenya and the United States, which provides the framework for technical assistance, capacity building, and long-term development of Kenya’s nuclear energy sector.

The initiative signals Kenya’s ambition to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, while supporting economic growth and regional energy integration.
