KAMPALA, Uganda — The United States Embassy in Uganda has issued a security alert urging U.S. citizens to exercise heightened caution across the country as Uganda awaits official results from the presidential election held on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
In the alert, the embassy cited reports of security forces using teargas and firing into the air to disperse gatherings in various parts of the country following the polls.
While official election results are yet to be announced, tensions remain high, prompting warnings against unnecessary movement and public gatherings.

The embassy advised U.S. citizens to avoid large crowds and demonstrations, keep a low profile, and remain vigilant in their surroundings during this period of uncertainty.
“U.S. citizens are encouraged to exercise enhanced caution, avoid large public gatherings, and limit unnecessary movements,” the advisory said.
Americans in Uganda were also urged to monitor local media closely for updates, keep their mobile phones charged, and ensure emergency contact numbers are programmed into their devices.
The embassy further reminded U.S. nationals to carry proper identification at all times, including a valid U.S. passport with a current Ugandan visa.
Uganda has previously experienced post-election tensions marked by heavy security deployments and restrictions on public assemblies. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the reported security incidents.
The U.S. Embassy said it would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
