BLANTYRE, Malawi — Police in Malawi are investigating the abduction of British national Nusrat Osman, 47, who was seized in Blantyre last Friday by four men travelling in a grey Nissan Dualis.
Osman, a mother of two young children and an auditor working for a local firm, was reportedly abducted at around 12:30 p.m. on September 11 in the Mount Pleasant area of Blantyre, according to Malawi Police.
Police have launched an intensive search for the missing woman and are appealing to members of the public for information that could help locate her.
Police Offer $17,000 Reward
The Malawi Police Service has offered a 30 million Malawi kwacha reward, equivalent to more than $17,000 (£12,600), for credible information that directly leads to Osman’s rescue and the arrest, prosecution and conviction of those responsible.
Police said information provided by members of the public would be treated confidentially.
Authorities have also been sending SMS appeals to residents as investigators seek information about Osman’s whereabouts and the vehicle allegedly used in the abduction.
Police identified the suspected vehicle as a grey Nissan Dualis, reportedly bearing registration number CA 6956.
Motive Remains Unknown
Police have not established a motive for the reported abduction.
No individual or group has claimed responsibility, and authorities said the kidnappers had not contacted either Osman’s family or police as of Tuesday.
Investigators have urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could interfere with the investigation.
Husband Appeals for Help
Osman’s husband, Nazil Osman, has spoken of his distress over her disappearance.
“I don’t know where she is or how she is. My wife is an auditor and I have no issues with anyone,” he was quoted as saying by Malawi’s Nyasa Times.
Osman works for Audit Consult Limited, which operates from Keza Office Park in Blantyre, according to local reports.
The circumstances surrounding her disappearance have left her family and colleagues seeking information about her whereabouts.
UK Government in Contact With Authorities
The UK’s Foreign Office told the BBC that it was aware of reports that a British national had been abducted in Malawi.
The department said it was in contact with local authorities regarding the case.
The Foreign Office has not publicly disclosed further details about its involvement.
Police Intensify Search
Malawi Police have intensified efforts to locate Osman, appealing for information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or seen the suspected vehicle.
The investigation remains active, with authorities yet to establish who carried out the abduction, where Osman is being held or why she was targeted.
