NAIROBI, Kenya- Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has firmly dismissed speculation that he could join President William Ruto’s administration, insisting he will instead challenge him at the ballot box.
Speaking on Thursday after hosting leaders of the Linda Mwananchi movement led by Senator Edwin Sifuna, Musyoka said he was the target of what he described as a “terrible attack” through claims that he had held a meeting with President Ruto earlier in the day.
“I am under attack. A terrible attack. That I met William Ruto this morning,” Kalonzo said, dismissing the reports as false.
The former Vice President used the occasion to reaffirm his commitment to the opposition, saying there was no possibility of him working with the Head of State.
“We are going to unite. We have no option. That this country shall be a true democracy, not a dictatorship,” he said.
“I want to tell William Ruto, stop imagining that Kalonzo Musyoka can join you. We shall meet on the ballot.”
Kalonzo’s remarks come amid persistent political speculation over possible realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election, with rumours repeatedly emerging that some opposition leaders could strike deals with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
However, the Wiper leader maintained that the opposition’s focus remains on presenting a united front against President Ruto in the next election.
He also referenced the recent Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, saying the outcome demonstrated that voters could distinguish between development initiatives and their democratic choices.
“The people of Ol Kalou are an amazing lot of people. They have shown that the right to development is a basic need. But they will vote with such determination,” he said.
Drawing parallels with the landmark 2002 General Election that ended KANU’s nearly four-decade rule, Kalonzo said Kenya was approaching another defining political moment.
“We have a 2002 moment. Anyone who tries to mess with the people’s wishes will be in trouble,” he said.
His comments are likely to reinforce his position within the opposition coalition as parties continue consultations aimed at forging a united challenge against President Ruto in the 2027 polls.
