Kenya Power Announces 8 Counties to Experience Electricity Interruptions on Tuesday, May 27

Date:

Nairobi, Kenya- Kenya Power has announced a scheduled power interruption for Tuesday, May 27, affecting several counties across the country as part of ongoing maintenance to improve service reliability.

The utility company urges residents and businesses in the affected areas to plan ahead, noting that the outage will run for several hours in each location, depending on the nature of the work.

Here’s the regional breakdown of the planned outage:

Nairobi & Surrounding Areas

In the capital, the planned blackout will target parts of Lang’ata, Karen, and Industrial Area from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Kenya Power engineers will be conducting line upgrades and transformer servicing. Traffic lights and small businesses relying on single-phase power may experience disruptions.

Coast Region

Residents in Nyali, Bamburi, and parts of Mtwapa should expect interruptions between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM. Hotels, restaurants, and SMEs in the tourism belt are advised to switch to backup power to avoid service delays.

Western Kenya

Areas in Kisumu Central, Kakamega Town, and Mumias will be off-grid from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM for routine inspections and line clearance works.

Central Kenya

Power will be cut in parts of Murang’a, Nyeri, and Thika Road from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The company says the outage will allow crews to replace aging infrastructure and reduce future unplanned outages.

Rift Valley

Scheduled works in Nakuru, Eldoret, and parts of Kericho will cause outages from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Farmers using irrigation pumps are advised to water crops early and switch off equipment before the maintenance window begins.

What You Should Do Today

  • Charge all devices and power banks in the morning.
  • Unplug appliances during the outage to protect them from potential surges.
  • Use generators or solar kits where available.
  • Follow Kenya Power’s X account for real-time updates.

The utility firm has emphasized that these upgrades are necessary for “long-term grid stability and better service delivery.” Power is expected to be restored on a rolling basis as soon as each region’s maintenance is complete.

We’ll keep tracking any changes to the schedule and provide updates if anything shifts throughout the day.
