KWS Confirms Death of Lion ‘Kiminati’ After Hippo Attack in Maasai Mara

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has confirmed the death of Kiminati, an 11-year-old lion from the Naboisho Conservancy in the Maasai Mara ecosystem, following public speculation on social media about the circumstances surrounding its death.

In a statement posted on Facebook, KWS clarified that the lion died after a failed hunt, dispelling earlier reports suggesting he may have been killed in a territorial confrontation.

According to the agency, Kiminati is believed to have preyed on a baby hippo, an act that triggered a fierce retaliatory attack from the mother hippo.

“Despite the resilience lions are known for, the injuries sustained were severe and ultimately fatal,” KWS said.

The service described the incident as a stark reminder of the unforgiving nature of life in the wild, where even apex predators face constant risk.

“Survival in nature is never guaranteed; every hunt carries risk, and even the most dominant predators can become vulnerable in an instant.

“Encounters between powerful species such as lions and hippos are often intense and unpredictable, reflecting the delicate balance that governs our ecosystems,” KWS noted.

According to KWS, wildlife in the Mara ecosystem constantly contend with territorial disputes, predation risks, and environmental pressures, underscoring the harsh realities of survival in the bush.

The post also included images of rangers attempting to attend to the injured lion. Despite their efforts, Kiminati succumbed to his injuries.

The confirmation came amid the circulation of a graphic video on social media showing the injured lion, which sparked widespread reactions online.
