Linda Mwananchi Condemns Abduction of Tanzanian Activist Twaha Mwaipaya

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- The Linda Mwananchi Movement has condemned the reported abduction of Tanzanian activist Twaha Mwaipaya in Kamulu, Machakos County, and called on Kenyan authorities to establish his whereabouts.

In a statement issued Monday, the movement said Mwaipaya was seized on Sunday while travelling in a taxi to visit friends.

Amnesty International Kenya also raised the alarm, saying he was reportedly taken at about 2pm by people travelling in three vehicles, including a Toyota Land Cruiser Hardtop.

“Authorities must urgently establish his whereabouts and ensure his safety,” Amnesty said.

The rights group and the Defenders Coalition appealed for information that could help locate him.

Linda Mwananchi urged the government to protect Mwaipaya from harm and prevent his forced removal from Kenya.

It also called for an independent investigation into the incident and accountability for those involved.

The movement said the case raised concern about the safety of regional democracy activists and human rights defenders in Kenya.

Its statement cited the reported 2024 abduction of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye and the 2025 abduction of Tanzanian activist Maria Sarungi Tsehai, who was later released.

“Kenya must never become a place where people escaping repression are tracked down, abducted and delivered back into the hands of those they fear,” the statement said.

The movement accused President William Ruto’s administration of allowing Kenya to become unsafe for regional activists.
