KWALE, Kenya- A terrifying tragedy unfolded this morning in Kwale County as a light aircraft, believed to be carrying a dozen tourists, crashed and immediately ignited in a massive fireball.
The chartered plane, registration number 5Y-CCA, was on a scheduled tourist transfer, flying from the Diani area to the world-famous Kichwa Tembo safari lodge in the Maasai Mara.
Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) Director General Emile Arao has confirmed the incident, revealing that the aircraft went down in the Tsimba-Matuga area of Matuga Constituency early Tuesday.
Eyewitness accounts from a reporter on the scene, speaking to Citizen TV, painted a grim picture: the aircraft reportedly erupted into flames on impact. The fate of the 12 people on board remains unconfirmed, with fears mounting for all occupants.
Security forces and emergency government agencies have managed to reach the remote crash site, and a desperate rescue and recovery operation is now underway. However, their efforts are being severely hampered by harsh weather conditions in the area.
