Kenya’s First Ambassador To The US Dies

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Cabinet Minister and veteran diplomat Burudi Nabwera, who served as Kenya’s first ambassador to the United States and the country’s first Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has died aged 99.

Nabwera’s death marks the end of a public service career that spanned diplomacy, government and elective politics, including his tenure as Minister of State in the Office of the President.

He also made history in Kenya’s parliamentary politics after becoming the first Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency following its creation in 1988.

Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya led the tributes, describing Nabwera as a distinguished leader who served the country with dedication and honour.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Ambassador Mzee Burudi Nabwera, a distinguished leader and diplomat who served our nation with dedication and honour,” Oparanya said.

Nabwera Made History In Kenya’s Diplomacy

Nabwera held key diplomatic assignments during his career, representing Kenya at a time when the country was establishing its presence on the international stage.

He served as Kenya’s first ambassador to the United States and became the country’s first Permanent Representative to the United Nations, positions that placed him at the centre of Kenya’s early diplomatic engagement with major international institutions.

His diplomatic service formed a significant part of his public career, alongside his subsequent work in government and politics.

Former Minister Served In Office Of The President

Beyond diplomacy, Nabwera served as Minister of State in the Office of the President, taking on responsibilities within the executive arm of government.

His career also extended to elective politics, where he represented Lugari Constituency in Parliament after it was established in 1988.

As the constituency’s first MP, Nabwera became part of the early political leadership representing the area in the National Assembly.

Oparanya Leads Tributes To Veteran Leader

Oparanya’s message highlighted Nabwera’s contribution to public service and his role in representing Kenya at home and abroad.

The veteran diplomat’s death comes with a legacy spanning international relations, executive government and parliamentary representation.
