NAIROBI, Kenya – A fiery explosion involving three tankers lit up Nakuru County’s early morning skies on Saturday, June 14, sending shockwaves across the Pipeline area and causing chaos along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
The incident, which began with the explosion of a single fuel tanker at the Barnabas stage around dawn, quickly escalated into a raging inferno. Several nearby petroleum tankers and parked lorries were engulfed as flames spread rapidly, fanned by the volatile fuel content.
Emergency responders raced to the scene as plumes of black smoke towered above the town. Two people were injured in the blast, with responders confirming they were rushed to a nearby hospital. Their condition remains unclear.
The explosion didn’t just bring fire—it brought traffic to a screeching halt. Authorities closed off the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway, a vital artery for transport in the region, making the area impassable for several hours.
Motorists were urged to steer clear of the scene and use alternate routes as crews worked to contain the flames and assess the damage.
While the inferno has since been brought under control, the silence from local authorities has been loud. Neither the Nakuru County Government nor the police had issued an official statement by midday, as investigations into what triggered the explosion continued.
What is known is this: a single tanker exploded. And in a matter of minutes, a parking yard became a fiery battlefield.
As images of burning tankers and crippled roadways flood social media, the public is demanding answers.
