NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya has clinched a coveted seat on the United Nations Tourism Executive Council, solidifying its rising status as a continental powerhouse in sustainable and inclusive tourism.
The announcement was made during the 68th UN Tourism Commission for Africa meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria, where Kenya’s candidacy was overwhelmingly backed by African member states.
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano welcomed the election as a continental milestone.
“This win is not just for Kenya; it is for Africa,” Miano said. “It shows that our collective voice matters in global tourism governance. We are committed to championing policies that promote sustainable tourism, community empowerment, and economic resilience.”

Kenya will serve on the influential council for the next four years, a tenure expected to shape international policy around pressing global issues such as climate change, artificial intelligence, and equitable distribution of tourism benefits.
The position also enhances Kenya’s prospects for strategic partnerships and international visibility.
The country currently chairs the UN Tourism and Competitiveness Committee and will now also take up seats on the Programme and Budget, and Tourism and Sustainability Committees from 2023 to 2027.
Kenya’s election comes as it concludes its term as Vice Chair of the UN Tourism Regional Commission for Africa, capping a period of sustained leadership and continental engagement.
The high-level Abuja forum brought together African ministers, private sector players and development partners to discuss innovation, regional cooperation, and the future of tourism education across the continent.
