NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya’s Government is expected to spend a Sh106 billion, to implement the far-reaching reforms recommendation by the retired Chief Justice David Maraga taskforce.
The reforms, formally launched on Wednesday by President William Ruto, will see a section of the total amount, some Sh22 billion spent on the officer’s welfare.
Further, President Ruto revealed that Sh37 billion will go to upgrading, “hardware as well as welfare reform.”
A further Sh45 billion will be spent on modernising the National Police Service, Kenya Wildlife Service and the National Youth Service.
The National Treasury and development partners are expected to finance the reforms.
“Without doubt, the recommended reforms will also require comprehensive institutional changes, beginning with legislation,” the President said.
“Consequently, we are undertaking sweeping reforms of existing laws and introducing new ones that will form the backbone of a revamped national security framework.”
The NPS has specifically been on the spot for breaking the law by engaging in acts of corruption, abductions and extra-judicial killings.
Such vices, the President said have over time led to the erosion of trust from the members of the public.
The President said the government is expected to recommend changes in laws to ensure they align with what is now known as the Maraga reforms.
