Speaking during the installation of Bishop Peter Kamani as the head of the Catholic Diocese of Embu on Saturday, November 16, Kenyatta underscored the importance of transcending partisan politics for the sake of nation-building.
“Politics is part of our democratic fabric, but it should not divide us or stall our progress,” Kenyatta said. “In these challenging times, we must remember that we are one people with one destiny. Our nation cannot prosper if we continue to let political differences define us.”
The event, a major milestone for the Catholic Church in Kenya, was attended by high-profile leaders, including President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, alongside religious leaders and members of the public.
The Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya, Archbishop Hubertus Matheus van Megen, led the religious delegation, which included several local bishops.
Kenyatta used the occasion to highlight the Church’s pivotal role in fostering reconciliation and healing within society.
“The Church has always been a beacon of hope,” he said. “Its leaders play a critical role in bridging divides and offering moral guidance to our communities.”
Bishop Kamani’s ordination was not just a religious ceremony but also a call for renewed commitment to national unity.
Kamani, who has served in various roles within the Church, takes the helm at a time when the country faces significant political and social challenges.
Kenyatta’s remarks struck a chord with many attendees, who noted the significance of the former president’s call for unity at a time of heightened political tensions.
As the country navigates its democratic path, Kenyatta’s plea for an inclusive approach to governance and cooperation across political lines resonates as a timely reminder of the shared responsibility to build a united Kenya.
The ceremony marked the beginning of Bishop Kamani’s tenure, symbolizing a new chapter for the Embu Diocese.
His installation comes amidst the Catholic Church’s ongoing efforts to mediate peace and encourage dialogue in Kenya’s diverse society.
