Wetangula, Gen Muhoozi Meet Over Lake Victoria Ahead of Parliamentary Games

Date:

KAMPALA, Uganda – National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Monday held discussions with Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, focusing on rising concerns over the management and security of Lake Victoria.

The Speaker, who met General Muhoozi during a courtesy call by the East African Community (EAC) Bureau of Speakers, underscored the need for fair and equitable use of the shared lake, which is a lifeline for millions across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Wetang’ula raised Kenya’s concern over persistent harassment of Kenyan fishermen by Ugandan security personnel, an issue that has strained cross-border relations and disrupted livelihoods along the shared water body.

General Muhoozi acknowledged the complaints, assuring the Speaker that Kampala was committed to addressing the issue.

He called for closer cooperation between the two countries, insisting that a unified security framework was essential for protecting the lake’s ecosystem, environment and economic resources.

Both leaders also commended the ongoing EAC Parliamentary Games, describing them as an important platform for nurturing unity and people-to-people ties across the region.

The tournament, which brings together legislators and staff from EAC member states, is expected to further strengthen parliamentary diplomacy.

Wetang’ula said the spirit of regional collaboration should extend beyond sports into key areas such as security, environmental conservation and economic development.
