NAIROBI, Kenya – A man has been charged with cyber harassment after allegedly sending a threatening message to a magistrate over a case she was handling.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said Francis Kamau Karanja was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts following investigations into the alleged message.
According to the prosecution, Karanja allegedly sent the message to the magistrate on September 28, 2026, at around 7pm using his mobile phone.
“The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has charged a man with cyber harassment for allegedly sending a threatening message to a magistrate over a case she was handling,” the ODPP said in a statement on Friday, October 9.
The suspect was arrested after the magistrate reported the matter at Kibera Police Station.
Suspect Denies Cyber Harassment Charge
Karanja appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Irene Thamara, where he denied the charge.
The prosecution alleges that the message was directed at the magistrate in connection with a case she was handling, raising concerns over the use of electronic communication to threaten judicial officers.
The ODPP did not disclose the contents of the alleged message or provide further details about the case the magistrate was handling.
Court To Rule On Bail Application
The matter is scheduled for October 9, 2026, when the court is expected to rule on Karanja’s bail application, according to the ODPP.
The case will proceed through the court process, with the allegations yet to be tested in court.
Karanja remains an accused person and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
