Mombasa County Officer Killed in Likoni Checkpoint Attack

Date:

MOMBASA, Kenya- A Mombasa County enforcement officer was killed and three others injured after a group of men attacked a cess collection checkpoint in Likoni early Monday, police said.

The attack happened at about 3.40 am at Barabara ya Mchanga. County enforcement officers and two Administration Police officers were manning the checkpoint when the group confronted them, according to a police report.

The report says the officers fired several rounds into the air to scare off the attackers but were overwhelmed.

During the scuffle, the assailants took an AK-47 rifle and 30 rounds of ammunition from an Administration Police officer.

The officer, identified as Wilfred Amin, suffered deep cuts to his hand and a gunshot wound to his left thigh.

County enforcement officer Ali Kibuyi sustained deep cuts to his head and right thigh.

Another enforcement officer, Omari Mzerera, was shot in the back and died.

A fourth officer, Bahiya Hassan, was not injured.

The injured officers were taken to Dian Beach Hospital for treatment.

Mzerera’s body was moved to the Coast General morgue after a doctor confirmed his death.

Mombasa County Police Commander Stella Cherono said investigations were underway to establish the attackers’ identities and motive.

Police believe the stolen rifle was used to shoot the officers.

Likoni police and Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers visited and processed the scene.

The case is under investigation by DCI Likoni.
