KIAMBU, Kenya—The Kenya National Farmers’ Federation (KENAFF) has disclosed that its 2022-2026 strategic plan focuses on youth empowerment through its Young Farmers Department.
Through the initiative, KENAFF promotes climate resilience through afforestation and biodiversity programs, advocates for farmer health insurance, and amplifies Kenyan farmers’ voices globally.
KENAFF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Daniel Mwendah remarked during the organisation’s 78thAnnual General Meeting in Thogoto, Kiambu County.
How Kenya can manage to fight hunger
Mwendah used the event to highlight the organisation’s remarkable milestones in driving sustainable agriculture.
“The world is struggling to feed itself. We need all partners to come together to stop the hunger. We believe that the farmers should be given a voice to articulate their issues,” Mwendah added.
The CEO also highlighted KENAFF’s pivotal role in managing a comprehensive farmers’ database, providing targeted training on climate-smart agricultural practices, and fostering sustainable agri-food systems to address climate change mitigation effectively.
“As young farmers, we want youth-friendly policies, especially for youths in agriculture,” said Integrated Soil Fertility Management trainee and farmer James Gitobu.
Speaking simultaneously, Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture Karanja Mwihia observed that “farmers are the golden goose of our nation, and safeguarding their welfare is paramount.”
CS Karanja urged KENAFF to lead the way in farmer training, technology adoption, market linkages, lobbying, and capacity building.
The CS encouraged the federation to champion digital government initiatives like KIAMIS and the e-subsidy program to boost productivity and ensure no farmer is left behind.

He also urged farmers to actively engage with ongoing projects and initiatives at the national and county levels to maximise their benefits.
Chairperson of the Kenya Coffee Producers Association, Peter Gikonyo, commended the KENAFF team for their excellent planning of the AGM and thanked delegates, leaders, and partners for their contributions.
He highlighted the National Board’s leadership in elevating KENAFF globally and acknowledged the insightful input from guest speakers and panellists on soil health.
He also praised the chief guest, CS Karanja, for his inspiring address.
The Cabinet Secretary also participated in the ceremonial planting of a commemorative tree and visited the various exhibitions showcased at the KENAFF headquarters.
