Kenyan singer and entrepreneur Esther Akoth, popularly known as Akothee, has opened up about her brief marriage to Swiss national Dennis Schweizer, revealing why the union ended just months after their high-profile wedding.
The couple tied the knot in a lavish white ceremony in Nairobi on 10 April 2023. The event captured the attention of fans and the media, marking what appeared to be a fairy-tale moment for the 43-year-old mother of five.
However, the marriage came to an abrupt end in June 2023, barely two months later. Akothee described the experience on social media as a “big wedding, small marriage,” sharing that the breakup stemmed from a lack of transparency on Schweizer’s part.
“I fell into this trap. I thought he was genuine, but probably he was,” Akothee reflected.

She revealed that Schweizer had hidden significant personal struggles before the wedding, including his battle with bipolar disorder.
For her, it was not the mental health condition itself that caused the split but the secrecy surrounding it.
“It’s just that he never disclosed to me that he was bipolar, so I left because I couldn’t keep up with the outbursts. I was losing myself and had to pick myself up every time he lost it,” she explained.
The singer used her experience to caution women, especially those over 40, about the importance of honesty and maturity in relationships.

She emphasized that at her stage in life, there is no room for indecision or dishonesty.
Comparing her marriage to “chewing gum that has lost its flavour,” Akothee said she made the difficult decision to leave for her own well-being.
“I pray that none of my children ever fall in such a situation. Imagine the whole world watching such a beautiful wedding, only for it to last three weeks,” she added.
Despite the public scrutiny, Akothee remains firm in her decision, stating that it is better to be “outside” than trapped in a dishonest union.
