NAIROBI, Kenya – Attorney General Dorcas Oduor has appointed Teresia Wanjiku Gathagu as the new Registrar of Societies in Kenya, effective from April 4, 2025, according to a gazette notice.
Wanjiku, who has previously served as Chief State Counsel at the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning, takes on the crucial role overseeing the registration and compliance of various societies under Kenyan law.
The Registrar of Societies, an office within the Attorney General’s office, is responsible for the registration of all types of societies, including charitable organisations, recreational clubs, and cultural associations.
The role also includes confirming officials of registered societies, approving amendments to society constitutions, and ensuring compliance with the Societies Act (Cap 108).
In addition, the Registrar has the authority to grant exemptions to certain societies, such as religious organizations, based on recommendations from the Attorney General.
Wanjiku’s appointment highlights the government’s continued efforts to strengthen the regulatory framework governing the diverse range of organisations operating within the country.
