NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has suspended Dr. Swarup Mishra as the chairperson of the Kenya BioVax Institute, effective immediately, in light of ongoing investigations into serious allegations of illegal and unethical kidney transplant procedures at Mediheal Hospital, a facility Mishra founded.
In a statement released on Friday, President Ruto emphasized that the suspension will remain in place until a thorough investigation into the allegations is completed.
“The suspension shall remain in force pending the outcome of investigations into serious allegations of unethical and illegal activities involving kidney transplant procedures at Mediheal Hospital and Fertility Centre in Eldoret,” Ruto stated.
The suspension comes just six months after Mishra was appointed as the chairperson of the BioVax Institute’s board of directors, a position he took up in November 2024.
Mishra, also the owner of Mediheal Group of Hospitals, has faced growing scrutiny following the suspension of kidney transplant services at his hospital on Wednesday due to ethical concerns raised by both the government and the public.
The Ministry of Health suspended transplant services, citing violations of ethical standards in the conduct of the procedures.
Mishra, a former Member of Parliament for Kesses, has long been known for his philanthropic efforts in the Rift Valley region, where he earned a reputation for being a generous community benefactor.
Despite his popularity, the allegations against him have raised serious concerns about integrity in healthcare, which President Ruto has vowed to address.
The government’s actions are part of a broader commitment to combat corruption and uphold integrity in the healthcare system, particularly in the face of emerging concerns about unethical practices in medical procedures.
The suspension of Mishra is a significant move in ensuring that justice is served and that such incidents are thoroughly investigated.
