NAIROBI, Kenya –Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Ong’ondo Were, was tragically killed on April 30, 2025, in a shooting along Valley Road near City Mortuary in Nairobi.
A post-mortem conducted on May 5 revealed that Were was shot five times at close range, with bullets striking vital organs, including his heart.
The government pathologist, Johansen Oduor, confirmed that the MP died from excessive bleeding caused by the gunshots, and his chances of survival were slim due to the severity of the injuries.
The post-mortem was conducted at Lee Funeral Home as investigations into the murder intensify.
Four suspects have been arrested in connection with Were’s death, including a serving police officer.
The suspects—William Imoli Shighali, Juma Ali Hikal, Douglas Muchiri Wambugu, and David Mihigo Kagame—were presented in court at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Magistrate Irene Gichobi allowed police to hold the suspects for 30 days as investigations continue.
The police have stated that they are still collecting crucial evidence, including conducting further raids at the suspects’ homes.
The motive behind the murder remains unclear, and the whereabouts of the weapon used in the killing are yet to be disclosed by the suspects.

President William Ruto condemned the assassination and vowed to ensure that those responsible would be brought to justice.
He emphasized that his administration is committed to safeguarding the lives of Kenyans, stating, “Lawlessness, violence cannot be part of our culture. We have a country to protect. Stability, peace, unity of the nation is a major ingredient in development and growing the economy.”
Ruto added, “We will get them, they will not succeed, they will have nowhere to hide, and we will go after their collaborators until we ensure that such an incident does not happen again in the country.”
The suspects were apprehended in a hideout in Dandora and the larger Eastlands area, with police confirming that some are linked to organized criminal gangs, such as “Mjahidin,” which has been associated with armed robberies in Eastlands.
Police spokesman Michael Muchiri assured the public that investigators and technical teams are working tirelessly to determine the motive behind the murder and bring all those involved to justice.
Authorities also recovered three motorcycles, including one used in the escape, and two cars, one of which was used as a getaway vehicle.
The first prime suspect was arrested after being trailed from the USIU area, and he later led detectives to the hideout of his accomplice.
