NAIROBI, Kenya — Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga has reaffirmed the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP)’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation in the fight against transnational organised crime through enhanced mutual legal assistance and interagency collaboration.
Ingonga made the remarks on Tuesday while hosting India’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Dr. Adarsh Swaika, who paid him a courtesy call at the ODPP headquarters in Nairobi.
The meeting focused on strengthening legal cooperation between Kenya and India, with both sides discussing ways to deepen their long-standing bilateral partnership and enhance collaboration in tackling cross-border crime.
Focus on Transnational Crime
Speaking during the meeting, Ingonga emphasized that international cooperation is essential in addressing increasingly sophisticated forms of organised crime that transcend national borders.
“The fight against transnational organized crime requires strong international partnerships, effective mutual legal assistance, and seamless interagency cooperation. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions remains committed to working closely with our counterparts to strengthen the rule of law and ensure that criminals do not exploit international borders to evade justice,” he said.
The DPP noted that closer collaboration between prosecution agencies would strengthen the administration of justice and improve the effectiveness of investigations and prosecutions involving international criminal networks.
Capacity Building for Prosecutors
The discussions also explored opportunities to strengthen the capacity of prosecutors through specialised training on complex and emerging forms of organised crime.
According to the ODPP, the two sides considered prosecutor exchange programmes and advanced training initiatives aimed at promoting knowledge-sharing and the exchange of best practices between Kenya and India.
The proposed collaboration seeks to equip prosecutors with skills needed to handle increasingly sophisticated cross-border criminal cases.
India Pledges Continued Cooperation
High Commissioner Dr. Adarsh Swaika reaffirmed India’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Kenya in the justice sector, particularly in legal and prosecutorial capacity building.
“India values its strong and enduring partnership with Kenya. We are committed to deepening our collaboration in legal and prosecutorial matters through capacity building, skills development, and the exchange of expertise to effectively address emerging transnational crime challenges,” he said.
The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts by both countries to strengthen bilateral cooperation in criminal justice, legal assistance, and the fight against transnational organised crime.
