NAIROBI, Kenya — A total of 22 pedestrians have been arraigned in court for allegedly obstructing the free flow of traffic by failing to use the Allsops footbridge, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced.
In a statement, NTSA said the enforcement action was carried out in collaboration with the National Police Service (NPS) and the Nairobi City County Government as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and reduce pedestrian fatalities.
The authority said the three agencies will continue conducting public awareness campaigns to educate pedestrians on the importance of using designated crossing points and footbridges.
Pedestrians Account for 38pc of Road Deaths
NTSA expressed concern over the rising number of pedestrian casualties, noting that pedestrians accounted for 38 per cent of all road traffic crash victims as of June 30, 2026.
The authority described the trend as alarming and called for collective efforts from all road users and stakeholders to reduce fatalities.
“Ending pedestrian fatalities requires concerted efforts from everyone, and we call upon all stakeholders to play their part,” NTSA said.
Call for Compliance
The authority urged pedestrians to comply with traffic regulations by using available footbridges and designated pedestrian crossings at all times.
According to NTSA, adherence to safe road-use practices is essential in reducing accidents and protecting lives, particularly along busy highways and major urban roads.
The enforcement operation at Allsops forms part of broader initiatives aimed at improving road safety through a combination of public education and enforcement of traffic laws.
