MIGORI, Kenya- Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused unnamed actors of using a coordinated tactic to disrupt an opposition political engagement in Migori County, saying stones were thrown before tear gas was deployed.
Speaking after the incident, Kalonzo stood beside a black vehicle with a visibly damaged windscreen as he addressed supporters and fellow opposition leaders.
“The script is, throw the stone, then throw the teargas,” the Wiper leader said.
The Wiper Patriotic Front said in a statement that Kalonzo and other opposition leaders were attacked by suspected goons and exposed to police tear gas while holding public rallies in Migori under the Ukombozi Tour.
The party said the leaders had been meeting residents to discuss issues affecting Kenyans and the country’s political future when the engagements were disrupted.
Kalonzo described the incidents as political intolerance and a violation of constitutional rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of expression and political participation.
Damaged vehicles seen after incident
The convoy included Kalonzo, Democratic Party Leader Justin Muturi and DAP-K Leader Eugene Wamalwa.
Kalonzo said neither violence nor intimidation would stop the opposition from continuing its public engagements across the country.
“The leaders vowed to proceed with their remaining rallies as scheduled, emphasising that their commitment to engaging Kenyans remains unchanged,” the statement said.
The Wiper leader called on the National Police Service and other security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and guarantee the safety of all Kenyans attending political gatherings.
He said political differences should not be used to justify violence, harassment or intimidation.
The Migori incident occurred during the first leg of Kalonzo’s two-day Ukombozi Tour of South Nyanza.
The programme included rallies in Ntimaru, Kehancha and Migori town, before the opposition delegation proceeds to Homa Bay County for engagements in Oyugis and Kendu Bay.
The tour is part of Kalonzo’s wider effort to build support in Luo Nyanza as opposition leaders position themselves for the 2027 General Election.
