EACC Arrests Former Auditor General Deputy Director Over Alleged Fake Degree

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a former Deputy Director of Audit at the Office of the Auditor General over allegations of using a forged academic certificate to secure employment.

In a statement issued on Friday, August 7, the anti-graft agency said the former official is accused of presenting a fake Bachelor of Commerce degree certificate during the recruitment process for an audit position at the Office of the Auditor General.

The EACC said investigations established that the certificate submitted by the suspect was purportedly issued by Mount Kenya University.

Following the conclusion of investigations, the Commission forwarded the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for consideration.

The DPP subsequently approved charges against the suspect relating to forgery, uttering a false document, deceiving a principal and fraudulent acquisition of public property.

“Upon conclusion of investigations, the Commission forwarded the investigation file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who approved charges of Forgery, Uttering a False Document, Deceiving a Principal, and Fraudulent Acquisition of Public Property against the suspect,” the EACC said.

The allegations centre on the authenticity of the academic qualification presented during the former official’s recruitment and whether the document was used to obtain employment and associated public benefits unlawfully.

The arrest marks the latest action by the anti-corruption agency in its efforts to investigate alleged fraudulent acquisition of public resources and misconduct involving public institutions.

Further details on the suspect’s identity, court appearance and the specific circumstances surrounding the alleged forgery are expected as the case progresses.
