Former Taita Taveta Official Charged Over Sh8.3 Million Public Funds Fraud

Date:

VOI, Kenya — A former Taita Taveta County Government official has been charged over allegations of fraud involving Sh8.3 million in public funds, as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) intensifies efforts to prosecute suspected corruption cases.

Geoffrey Kimonge Mbogo, who previously served as Director of Political Affairs at the Taita Taveta County Government, was arrested following investigations by the anti-graft agency and arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court in Voi.

Mbogo denied the charges relating to alleged corruption and economic crimes.

The court granted him a cash bail of Sh1 million or a bond of Sh2 million with a similar surety as he awaits further proceedings.

EACC said the arrest and arraignment followed investigations into the alleged loss of public funds, with the case forming part of its mandate to investigate and prosecute suspected corruption and economic offences.

The Constitution of Kenya places responsibility on public officers to uphold integrity, transparency, and accountability in the management of public resources. Chapter Six of the Constitution requires state officers to demonstrate honesty and protect public confidence in leadership.

Public accountability focus

The case adds to ongoing efforts by anti-corruption agencies to address misuse of county resources, where devolved governments have faced scrutiny over procurement processes, irregular payments, and financial management.

Under the Public Finance Management framework, public entities are required to ensure that government funds are used lawfully and efficiently.

EACC has continued to pursue cases involving former and serving officials accused of economic crimes, including abuse of office, fraudulent acquisition of public property and conflict of interest.

However, the charges against Mbogo remain allegations until proven in court.
