NAIROBI, Kenya – The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has summoned Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok, former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati, and 12 others to appear before investigators on Monday over allegations of corruption, conflict of interest, and irregular tender awards.

In summons issued Friday, the Commission directed the suspects to present themselves at Integrity Centre in Nairobi on September 1, 2025, at 8:00 am for processing ahead of arraignment in court.

Bomet Governor Barchok Case

Governor Barchok is under investigation alongside Evans Kipkoech Korir, Director of Chemasus Construction Limited, in connection with county tender scandals worth Sh152 million spanning the 2019/2020 to 2024/2025 financial years.

The duo faces charges of conflict of interest, unlawful acquisition of public property, and money laundering.

Ex-Bungoma Governor Wangamati Case

Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati, his relatives, and several former senior county officers are accused of embezzlement of public funds and abuse of office in a Sh70 million scandal linked to the Department of Roads between November 2019 and August 2021.

Among those charged alongside him are:

  • Michael Wangamati and Edward Barasa Wangamati, Directors of Skyman Freighters Ltd and Nabwala Construction Ltd.
  • Nicholas Wangamati, also listed in the case.
  • Edward Maaya Makhanu, linked to Fastect Suppliers Ltd, Kelco Builders, Mundesi Contractors Ltd, Nabweso Builders Ltd, and Valeria Construction Ltd.

  • Wafula Wakoli Chesititi, a supervisor and co-director in the same firms.
  • Bramwel Wakoli Chesititi, Juma Swaleh Juma, Jimmy Wekesa Barasa, and Joseph Wanyonyi Khaemba, all tied to different companies implicated in the tenders.

The accusations include conflict of interest, irregular procurement, and willful failure to comply with public finance laws.

EACC Statement

“Consequently, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) hereby directs the above-named suspects to present themselves at the EACC Headquarters at Integrity Centre on Monday, September 1, 2025, at 8 am for processing and arraignment,” read the summons signed by EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud.

The case adds to the growing list of high-profile graft investigations targeting sitting and former county bosses as part of the anti-graft agency’s intensified crackdown on corruption in devolved units.
