NAIROBI, Kenya – Former East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member Abubakar Zein Abubakar has died.

Abubakar passed away on Thursday at Avenue Hospital in Nairobi, according to sources close to his family and the Wiper Democratic Movement.

The cause of his death had not been disclosed by the time of publication.

Abubakar served as a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly from 2012 to 2022, where he represented Kenya and participated in regional legislative and integration processes under the East African Community.

At the time of his death, he was serving as the Head of the Wiper Party Presidential Secretariat and Campaign, a position he was appointed to by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka in December 2024.

During his tenure within the party, Abubakar was involved in strategy, governance and policy matters and remained an influential figure in Wiper’s leadership.

Tributes began pouring in shortly after news of his death emerged.

ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale described him as a humble and approachable leader.

“Rest in peace, Mheshimiwa Abubakar Zein. A good man has rested. A man of few words with a great smile,” Etale said.

Further tributes from political leaders, colleagues and friends are expected as the family prepares to announce funeral and burial arrangements.

More details, including the cause of death and official funeral programme, are expected as they become available.
