Former Jubilee SG Raphael Tuju Officially Quits Party After Long Tenure

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju has formally resigned from the outfit, ending a six-year tenure marked by Kenya’s shifting political landscape.

In a resignation letter dated August 19, Tuju reflected on his service to the party and its leader, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, recalling their political journey that began during the Party of National Unity (PNU) days under the late President Mwai Kibaki.

“This letter is to thank you and to pay tribute to our political association that dates back to the time when I worked with you under President Kibaki to create the PNU outfit,” Tuju wrote.

He expressed gratitude to Kenyatta for entrusting him with the powerful role of Secretary General, noting that his appointment signaled inclusivity within a party largely anchored in Kikuyu and Kalenjin support bases.

“What I am satisfied about is that I remained loyal to you as the President, the Party leader, and as a member of the cabinet,” he added.

However, Tuju said he no longer sees any value he can add to Jubilee, pledging instead to continue working with Kenyatta in other endeavors.

He also struck an optimistic note about Kenya’s future despite ongoing challenges of governance and public unrest.

“I hope that more Kenyans will be able to understand that even in the midst of so much misery and poverty, the potential of this country is up there,” he wrote, citing Nairobi’s growing importance as a hub for international organizations such as the United Nations.

Tuju served as Jubilee’s Secretary General through two election cycles and later held cabinet positions under President Kenyatta.

His role was taken over by Jeremiah Kioni in 2022, after the party realigned in the wake of the general elections.
