BONDO, Kenya — The state funeral of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga is underway at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), following a meticulously planned programme that reflects the national significance of the day.
According to the official schedule, guests were expected to be seated by 7 a.m., ahead of the arrival of family members at 8 a.m. and dignitaries from 8:30 a.m.
President William Ruto, accompanied by First Lady Rachel Ruto, was slated to arrive at 9 a.m. to lead the nation in paying final respects to the late opposition leader.
The day’s programme places Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen in charge of overseeing the event, with Kindiki expected to invite the President to deliver his tribute.
The interment service is being led by Rt. Prof. David Kodia, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Bondo.
After the official ceremony at JOOUST, the state funeral procession will escort Odinga’s body to his Kang’o Ka Jaramogi home in Bondo for a private burial.
The final rites include military and state honours, floral tributes, musical performances, and a session of votes of thanks, bringing to a close three days of national mourning.
Security remains tight in and around Bondo as thousands of mourners and guests converge to witness the historic farewell.
