NAIROBI, Kenya — Rigathi Gachagua has expressed deep condolences to Kenyans affected by the devastating floods in Nairobi and surrounding areas, calling for immediate and decisive government action to support victims.
In a statement shared on Sunday, Gachagua described the loss of life and property as “deeply painful and heartbreaking,” particularly given the harsh economic challenges many households are already facing.
He emphasised that the tragedy could have been mitigated through proactive and sustained planning rather than reactive responses that follow disasters.
“This disaster could have been mitigated through a proactive, sustained, and genuine commitment by the responsible authorities, rather than the knee-jerk reactions we often witness after tragedy has already struck,” he said.
Gachagua urged adherence to meteorological advisories while calling on both the National Government and Nairobi City County officials to take immediate practical measures.
He highlighted the importance of evacuation support, emergency shelters, drainage clearance, relief food distribution, provision of medical care, and timely public information.
“A government that cares should not spare any effort or its resources in protecting the lives and property of its people. Action must be timely, decisive, and genuine,” he stated.
Beyond immediate relief, Gachagua stressed the need for long-term development planning that addresses the realities of climate change, rapid population growth, and economic development.
He warned against short-term political interests shaping urban development, emphasising the importance of expert-led planning free from political interference.
“We must all remember that Kenya is our motherland, and safeguarding it is our greatest responsibility to future generations. We cannot bury our heads in the sand and dismiss the impact of climate change when its consequences are already with us,” Gachagua said.

He also called on citizens to exercise caution during the rainy season, check on neighbours, and share verified information about weather conditions and emergencies.
For those able, he urged support for affected families through housing, clothing, and food assistance.
Concluding his statement, Gachagua prayed for the recovery of the injured and the eternal rest of those who lost their lives.
“May Almighty God grant eternal rest to the souls of our departed brothers and sisters, and may perpetual light shine upon them forever,” he said.
Gachagua’s message follows a weekend of heavy rains and floods that have claimed at least 28 lives in Nairobi and caused widespread property destruction.
Authorities continue to coordinate rescue, relief, and emergency response efforts across affected areas.
