Govt Allocates Sh57 Billion for Sports Facilities Ahead of AFCON, CHAN Championships

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya—The government is investing Sh57 billion to construct and refurbish key sports venues in preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournaments, the Ministry of Defence has announced.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya shared details of the budgetary allocations during her presentation to the National Assembly’s Committee on Sports and Culture.

Among the highlights was the Sh44.7 billion earmarked for the new Talanta Stadium, which is currently 37% complete and projected to be finished by February 28, 2026.

Already, Sh2 billion has been paid to the Chinese contractor leading the construction effort.

Other significant projects include the phased renovation of the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The first phase, costing Sh3.6 billion, is designed to prepare the facility for the CHAN tournament scheduled for August.

The second phase, requiring Sh3.1 billion, aims to bring the stadium up to AFCON standards.

The Nyayo National Stadium, another key venue, has been allocated Sh1.1 billion for ongoing upgrades, with Sh200 million already spent on initial works.

Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret is receiving more than Sh3.5 billion, of which Sh300 million has been utilized so far.

Smaller but critical improvements have also been made at Police Sacco Stadium and Ulinzi Sports Complex, which will serve as training grounds.

Renovations at these facilities cost Sh582 million and Sh490 million, respectively, following recommendations by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

According to CS Tuya, these investments are on track, and she expressed confidence that all facilities will meet the required CAF standards within the set timelines.

She also emphasized the potential economic and social benefits of hosting the prestigious tournaments, describing the events as a source of national pride and a platform to showcase Kenya’s sporting infrastructure on an international stage.

Tuya further urged football fans to respect the renovated venues, highlighting that vandalism not only damages the country’s reputation but also places an undue financial burden on taxpayers.
