NAIROBI, Kenya – A General Service Unit (GSU) officer was killed on Saturday night following an altercation with a man at a hotel along Mombasa Road in Nairobi.
Police identified the deceased as Constable Nahson Katumo, service number 114506, attached to GSU Mike Company.
According to a police report, the officer had gone to Mwenje Resort and Restaurant, near Hilton Garden Hotel, to charge his phone when he got into an argument with a member of the public over unknown reasons.
Witnesses said the confrontation escalated, with the suspect allegedly overpowering and strangling the officer before dragging him into a nearby trench filled with water.
Officers from Embakasi Police Station who rushed to the scene found Katumo’s body submerged in the trench with visible injuries on his head and face.
A colleague of the deceased, Constable Mandela Nelson, was alerted to the incident and managed to arrest the suspect, who was also injured during the scuffle.
Police recovered a G3 rifle belonging to the slain officer, loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition.
The suspect was taken to Mama Lucy Hospital for treatment under police guard, while the officer’s body was moved to Kenyatta University Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Detectives from the DCI Embakasi and senior officers from the GSU are investigating the motive behind the incident.
