United States of America — Kenyan-born U.S. Army officer Silvia Jemutai has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel, marking a significant milestone in a distinguished military career that continues to inspire many in Kenya and across the diaspora.
The promotion ceremony was held at the Ordnance Training Support Facility, Fort Lee, Virginia, where Jemutai was celebrated by family, friends, and colleagues, according to Kenyan Diaspora Media.
Originally from Eldama Ravine in Baringo County, Lt. Col. Jemutai dedicated the achievement to her late mother, Jacqueline Alice Kirui, whom she described as a pillar of strength and a trailblazer whose sacrifices shaped her path to leadership.
She also paid tribute to her family, mentors, fellow officers, and soldiers who have supported her journey.
According to the U.S. Army structure, the force is divided into enlisted soldiers, warrant officers, and commissioned officers. Jemutai’s new rank places her within the Field Grade Officers tier — a senior leadership bracket that carries substantial command and operational responsibilities.
As a lieutenant colonel, she may command a battalion of 300 to 1,000 soldiers, overseeing training, operational readiness, and mission execution.
