NAIROBI, Kenya – Safaricom has announced a scheduled system maintenance on Monday night, March 24, set to temporarily disrupt M-Pesa services.
The 30-minute maintenance window will run from 1:00 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., during which M-Pesa services will be intermittent.
In a public notice, Safaricom assured customers that all other services, including calls, SMS, and mobile data, will remain unaffected during this period.
The company explained that the update is aimed at enhancing service delivery and maintaining customer satisfaction.
“We are continuously innovating and enhancing our services to connect our customers with endless possibilities,” the company stated, adding that the maintenance aligns with its promise to offer a “reliable, safe, secure, and superior customer experience.”
To minimize inconvenience, Safaricom has strategically scheduled the update during off-peak hours.
The company has also apologized for any disruptions and expressed gratitude for customers’ continued trust and support.
The maintenance comes as M-Pesa celebrates 18 years since its inception on March 6, 2007.
Launched as a domestic mobile money platform, M-Pesa provided millions of unbanked Kenyans with access to financial services.
Its simplicity and convenience quickly won over users, growing from 19,671 active users in its first month to over one million by November 2007.
Today, M-Pesa has grown into a financial giant, offering services that extend beyond money transfers to include credit, savings, and investment options.
Safaricom CEO revealed that M-Pesa has become a $1 billion (KSh 130 billion) business, serving over 34 million customers across its markets.
“It was set up to solve the problem of sending money, but it has evolved into credit and even investment,” the CEO noted.
M-Pesa’s impact has transcended borders, setting benchmarks for mobile money services worldwide.
