Matatu Strike Suspended After Talks With Operators, Security Agencies

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The matatu strike scheduled for Monday, February 2, 2026, has been suspended following consultations between public transport operators and security agencies.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Federation of Public Transport Sector (FPTS) said the decision was reached after meetings involving matatu operators, boda boda operators, and security agencies, who agreed to halt the planned industrial action to allow dialogue to continue.

“As a result of the consultations, it was agreed that the matatu strike scheduled for Monday, February 2, 2026, be suspended to give dialogue a chance,” the federation said.

The suspension means public transport services will operate normally across the country, easing fears of commuter disruption at the start of the week.

FPTS said the consultations are part of broader efforts to reach a lasting and amicable solution to the grievances that had prompted the strike notice.

While the federation did not detail the specific issues under discussion, recent tensions in the sector have centred on enforcement, security, and regulatory concerns.

The next phase of talks will expand to include representatives of private vehicle owners, freight operators, coach operators, matatu operators, as well as the National Police Service (NPS) and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

According to the federation, the wider engagement is aimed at addressing sector-wide challenges and promoting stability, safety, and efficiency within Kenya’s public transport system.

The matatu sector plays a critical role in urban mobility, particularly in Nairobi and other major towns, and disruptions often have immediate economic and social impacts.

Transport analysts say sustained dialogue between operators, regulators, and security agencies is key to reducing recurring standoffs that affect commuters and businesses.

For now, commuters can expect uninterrupted service as stakeholders prepare for further negotiations to resolve outstanding sectoral concerns.
