SIAYA, Kenya — Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has shared the untold story behind the distinctive marks on the face of his late brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, during the State Funeral Service held on Sunday at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Bondo.
Oburu said the mark on Raila’s forehead dated back to their time in Germany, while the scar on his mouth was the result of a childhood accident in Kisumu.
“Raila fell from a mango tree while we were playing. I had to carry him on my back as people laughed at us while I cried,” Oburu recalled, drawing laughter from mourners.
The senator described his younger brother as a courageous and determined man from an early age — one who often defied convention, even at home.
“He once told our father to come with us to the farm to pick cotton since it was such a difficult task,” Oburu said, to more laughter from the crowd.
Oburu also paid glowing tribute to Raila’s wife, Ida Odinga, commending her unwavering support during the veteran politician’s long detentions and political struggles.
“Mama Ida was very young when Raila was detained at 37. She remained committed to him. Some of you wouldn’t have sustained that — you’re too hot,” he joked, earning applause.
The senator further expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for his role in facilitating Raila’s treatment abroad and for supporting the family throughout his final journey.
“It is the President who organized how Raila was flown to India. He has really supported us to give him a befitting state burial,” he said.
The State Funeral brought together leaders from across the political divide and beyond Kenya’s borders, marking the final farewell to the man widely regarded as one of the country’s most enduring political figures.
