NAIROBI, Kenya — The government has announced plans to construct a new railway station next to Nyayo National Stadium and a railway spur line linking Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) to Talanta Sports City Stadium as part of preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a statement dated January 14, 2026, Kenya Railways Corporation said the project will be implemented under the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service to support Kenya’s successful co-hosting of AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
According to Kenya Railways, the railway spur will run from Nairobi Central Station through the Nyayo National Stadium area, Kibera, and terminate at Talanta Sports City Stadium.
The corporation said the project aims to provide a safe, reliable, and affordable transport solution to ease access to match venues during the tournament.
“The Government intends to construct a railway station adjacent to Nyayo National Stadium and a railway spur line from the Nairobi Central Station through the Nyayo National Stadium area, Kibera to Talanta Sports City Stadium,” Kenya Railways said.
The statement notes that matches in Kenya will be hosted at Nyayo National Stadium, Talanta Sports City Stadium, and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Nyayo Stadium has been designated as a training venue due to its central location.
Kenya Railways said the railway expansion is a key initiative to guarantee efficient mobility for fans, teams, and officials during the continental football tournament, while also enhancing long-term commuter rail services in Nairobi.
Kenya Railways said all encroachers had been advised and issued with notices in advance to vacate land earmarked for the development.
“To this end, all encroachers were advised and issued with notices in good time to vacate the railway corridor to pave way for construction,” the corporation said, adding that it is repossessing land identified for the project.
The agency warned that any illegal structures or property found on the corridor will be demolished or removed without further notice and at the encroacher’s risk and cost.
Kenya Railways maintains that the evictions are lawful and necessary to facilitate nationally significant infrastructure projects tied to AFCON 2027 and Nairobi’s transport development.
