Ruto Ally Oscar Sudi Says Gachagua to Be Arrested Despite Police Denials of Proof

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi, a close ally and staunch defender of President William Ruto, has sensationally claimed that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will soon be arrested for allegedly funding the June 25 Gen Z protests that left at least 15 people dead and led to widespread destruction and looting.

In a video posted on X, Sudi directly accuses Gachagua of bankrolling what began as peaceful youth demonstrations but spiraled into chaos.

“After cracking down on the perpetrators of the demonstrations, the focus now shifts to Wamunyoro. You’re next in line for arrest,” the politician said.

The June 25 protests were organized to mark the first anniversary of the deadly 2024 Gen Z demonstrations, during which over 60 youths were killed after storming Parliament to protest a proposed punitive tax law.

This year’s protests, initially peaceful and dominated by young people wielding only flags and mobile phones, quickly turned violent in parts of Nairobi and Central Kenya.

Businesses were looted, property torched, and scores arrested.

Gachagua, once seen as President Ruto’s most loyal deputy, has since fallen out with the administration and emerged as a fierce critic.

In his recent remarks, he claimed the violence was orchestrated by the state to justify a crackdown on dissenters.

Gachagua leads the Democratic Conscious Party (DCP), whose young officials have become the new targets of arrests by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Police say the group was part of a network that mobilized violence during the June 25 protests.

DCI boss Mohammed Amin has said investigations are ongoing into “funding networks” behind the chaos.

However, insiders at the DCI headquarters in Kiambu Road told Y News that they are under immense political pressure to arrest Gachagua—despite the lack of conclusive evidence linking him to the violence.

“We’ve been ordered to act, but so far, we don’t have a direct link tying Gachagua to any transaction or instruction related to the riots,” a senior DCI source, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed.

Another added, “It’s about neutralizing a political threat.”

Human rights organisations have raised concerns over the resurgence of arbitrary arrests and extra-judicial tactics reminiscent of the past regime.

During the June 25, 2024 protests, several youth were abducted in broad daylight and held incommunicado, some reappearing days later with signs of torture, while others remain missing.

Gachagua, for his part, has dared the government to arrest him if they have evidence.

“I am not afraid. Let them come for me. But they must show the country what proof they have,” he said.

Gachagua is currently leading other opposition leaders in a major campaign to ensure Ruto is not re-elected as President in 2027.
