NAROK, Kenya – President William Ruto reaffirmed his ongoing support for evangelical work in Kenya during a visit to Narok County on Sunday, responding to requests from local preachers for a ‘sign of State House’ in the region.
While Ruto acknowledged the request, he promised to contribute Ksh. 10 million toward the construction of a dedicated Pastors Plaza instead, a move that marks his continued financial backing for religious institutions despite some public backlash regarding large donations to churches.
Speaking to congregants, Ruto explained that while constructing a State Lodge was not feasible, the Pastors Plaza would serve as a symbolic representation of the government’s support for clergy and their role in society.
He assured the community that if construction faced any hurdles, he would rally support from Senators and governors to ensure the project’s success.
Despite criticism over his administration’s financial ties to religious groups, especially in light of the contentious church-based fundraising campaigns, Ruto has remained steadfast in his commitment to backing the evangelical community.
His remarks come after several public figures, including critics from within his own political circle, voiced concerns over the scale of donations to religious bodies.
The President also addressed his critics regarding the formation of a broad-based government, defending the coalition with opposition leader Raila Odinga as a vital step toward national unity.
“We are working hard to unite the people of Kenya. I am proud that Raila Odinga and I are working together to unite Kenyans. We are unapologetic, unashamed about uniting the people of Kenya,” he said.
In addition to these remarks, Ruto emphasized his administration’s continued fight against corruption.
He announced that the government would soon roll out e-Procurement platforms, a long-awaited reform intended to enhance transparency and accountability in public procurement processes.
“The e-Procurement we have been waiting for years has started this April as I committed,” Ruto added.
