SIAYA, Kenya — William Ruto has urged Kenyan youth not to allow themselves to be used by politicians for political interests, calling instead for empowerment and self-reliance.
Speaking on Sunday in Bondo, Siaya County, during the launch of a digital hub, the President said young people have for years been manipulated to advance political agendas.
“For a very long time, the young people of our nation have been used as political tools, goons, bloggers, and supporters for politicians. They deserve better. Do not accept anything less,” Ruto said.
He urged the youth to focus on opportunities created by the government rather than being drawn into political conflicts.
“Do not allow any politician to use your brains and energy to fight and secure votes. Use the opportunities given to you to advance yourselves so that you depend on yourselves,” he added.
Government programmes for youth
Ruto said his administration has introduced several initiatives aimed at creating opportunities for young people.
These include the expansion of digital hubs, the affordable housing programme and labour export initiatives that allow Kenyans to work abroad.
According to the President, about 540,000 Kenyan youth are currently working overseas, helping improve their livelihoods.
He also noted that 263 Members of Parliament are involved in establishing ICT hubs across the country to expand opportunities in the digital economy.
Focus on the digital and creative economy
Ruto encouraged young people to take advantage of opportunities in the ICT and creative sectors, including the use of social media platforms to build careers.
“I want every young person to pay attention to what we are doing to take advantage of the opportunities we are creating to help themselves and help the country grow,” he said.
He reiterated that young people should avoid being drawn into political conflicts or activities that could derail their future.
“Let nobody use you to cause chaos or do blogging for them or any political work. You also have children and your own life,” the President said.
