NAKURU, Kenya — At least six people have died following a fatal road accident involving a 14-seater matatu, a private van and a trailer along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.
The crash occurred on Thursday night, prompting the deployment of police officers and emergency response teams to the scene to rescue survivors and manage traffic along the busy highway.
According to preliminary reports, the collision claimed the lives of six people, with three of the deceased believed to be students.
Several other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to Burnt Forest and Plateau health facilities for treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to a mortuary pending identification and post-mortem examinations.
Images from the scene showed the 14-seater matatu extensively damaged, with its front section completely crushed, highlighting the force of the impact.
Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the crash, including whether speeding, dangerous overtaking or mechanical failure may have contributed to the collision.
The latest accident adds to growing concerns over road safety on the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway, one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors, which has witnessed several fatal crashes in recent years.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, observe traffic regulations and avoid reckless driving, particularly during night travel, as investigations continue.
