NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Nairobi Governor and National Economic Development Party (NEDP) leader Mike Sonko has urged Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to remain in the opposition, warning him against entering into a political alliance with President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on Thursday at the SKM Command Centre during a meeting of opposition leaders, Sonko described the next General Election as Kalonzo’s defining political moment and pledged his party’s support for the Wiper leader’s presidential bid.
“For now, Your Excellency, count on our overwhelming support. Tutatembea na wewe hii safari. Usijaribu kuenda huko…,” Sonko said, urging Kalonzo not to join the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Sonko said he remained committed to working with opposition leaders in advancing what he described as a people-centred political agenda.
“I am with the wananchi, and you have also been championing the same cause. We are pushing the same agenda together with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino,” he said.
His remarks come amid intensified consultations within the opposition as political leaders seek to build a united coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The meeting at the SKM Command Centre brought together several opposition figures as coalition-building efforts and strategy discussions gathered momentum in preparation for the next polls.
Kalonzo also used the meeting to dismiss speculation that he could work with President Ruto before the 2027 election, insisting he would remain in the opposition and challenge the President at the ballot.
“I want to tell Mr William Ruto, please stop imagining that I can ever join you. We will meet at the ballot,” Kalonzo said.
His remarks come amid sustained speculation over possible political realignments, with reports suggesting some leaders within Kenya Kwanza have sought to persuade the former Vice President to join the government.
However, Kalonzo has repeatedly maintained that he will remain in the opposition, positioning himself as one of the key figures seeking to unseat President Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
