BOMET, Kenya — At least six students were injured after a school bus carrying participants to the annual Kenya Music Festival overturned along the Bomet-Kaplong Highway on Sunday evening.
The bus, which was transporting students from Nairobi, overturned under circumstances that are yet to be established, sparking panic among the learners and motorists using the road.
Images from the scene showed the bus lying on its side after the crash, suggesting the driver may have lost control before the vehicle overturned. No other vehicle was involved in the accident.
With the main doors blocked by the impact, the students were forced to evacuate through the emergency exit with the help of members of the public who rushed to the scene moments after the accident.
Emergency responders attended to the injured students before they were taken to Kaplong Mission Hospital for treatment.
Preliminary reports indicate that six students sustained injuries, with all reported to be in stable condition.
Police are expected to investigate the circumstances that led to the crash and establish the exact cause of the accident.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of school transport, particularly during periods when students travel long distances to participate in national events such as the Kenya Music Festival.
The Bomet-Kaplong Highway has recorded several serious road accidents over the years and is regarded as one of the accident-prone roads in the region.
In May, several people were injured in a crash involving a double-cabin pickup and a motorcycle at the Meja-Chepkosa section of the highway, renewing calls for increased road safety measures along the route.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution while using the highway as investigations into Sunday’s accident continue.
